Neuroscience Working Group Report

Friday, December 6, 2019

Dear Colleagues,

I write to provide the report prepared by the Neuroscience Working Group, an ad hoc committee chaired by Daniel Colón-Ramos.   The report considers the thematic opportunities afforded by the 100 College Street building to promote research across the neurosciences.  The committee solicited suggestions from faculty and received almost three dozen proposals for neuroscience research clusters.  The proposed clusters spanned the Medical School, the FAS, and SEAS, and included more than 130 faculty.  As you will see in the report, the committee recommends that 100 College become the neuroscience nexus for the university with five areas of emphasis:  Building Blocks of Cognition, Development, Multiscale Circuits, Neurocomputation, and Neurodegeneration.

The committee’s recommendations will next be considered by the relevant deans and department chairs.  We would appreciate your thoughts and input about this report and its recommendations.  Please provide your observations and suggestions here.

I thank Daniel and the members of his committee for their diligent work and visionary planning over the past several months. Their conversations bridged the full scale and scope of neuroscience, a field that truly spans from molecules to minds.  Although all of the neurosciences will not fit into a single building, the creation of a nexus for neuroscience is a critical step in strengthening the sciences and engineering at Yale.  I look forward to taking this next step together.

Sincerely,

Scott Strobel
