[Summary: The university continues to monitor executive orders and other actions issued by the new federal administration, including those that impact research at Yale. A new webpage contains guidance from federal agencies and will continue to be updated as more information becomes available.]
Dear Faculty Colleagues,
As President McInnis and Provost Strobel wrote to the community last week, the university is actively monitoring executive orders, policies, and guidelines issued by the new federal administration. This includes actions that impact the critical research we conduct at Yale. I write to provide information based on what we know today and to share developing resources.
The administration’s January 27, 2025 memorandum calling for a temporary pause on disbursement of grants and loans issued by the federal government has been rescinded. However, the executive orders affecting sponsored research remain in place and are under court review, and federal agencies are sharing individual directives. To provide as much clarity as possible at this time, the Research at Yale website has been updated with guidance from various federal agencies. My office will continue to post information as it becomes available. If you have questions that are not addressed or insights you would like to share, please write to the Office of Sponsored Projects at osphelp@yale.edu. Your questions and examples of how new federal policy is impacting your research will inform how we can assist you moving forward.
This is a dynamic situation that has created uncertainty for researchers at Yale and across the country. I share the same concerns that many of you have expressed to me over the last two weeks. I want to reassure you that faculty administrators and colleagues from the Offices of the Vice Provost for Research, Sponsored Projects, General Counsel, and Federal and State Relations as well as representatives from deans’ offices are meeting regularly to interpret developments and issue guidance as quickly and clearly as possible. I will continue to share significant updates as they become available. Please also check the Research at Yale website, which we will continue to develop and update.
The research we conduct at Yale, in partnership with federal agencies, is critical to improving the human condition. You have my support—and the support of leaders across campus—for the work you do to advance Yale’s mission and make discoveries that benefit humanity.
Sincerely,
Michael C. Crair
