Dear Faculty Colleagues:
We are pleased to invite you to two upcoming workshops for faculty members. Rena Seltzer, of Leader Academic Coaching & Training, will return to campus on Thursday November 5 and Friday November 6, 2015 to offer sessions of her workshops: Negotiation Skills for Women Academics and Demystifying Work-Life Balance.
Further details on the programs can be found below.
1. Negotiation Skills for Women Academics
Thursday, November 5, 9-11 a.m., for pre-tenure faculty and tenured
Thursday, November 5, 1-3 p.m., for tenured faculty
Women tend to ask for less than their male counterparts and the consequences of this difference can add up to be a serious disadvantage over the course of a female academic’s career. Not just in salary, but in many other areas, there are benefits to be gained by negotiating and risks in failing to negotiate. In this interactive workshop attendees will practice thinking expansively about what can be requested and will learn strategies used by the most successful negotiators.
2. Demystifying Work-Life Balance
Friday, November 6, 10-11:30 a.m., for pre-tenure and tenured faculty
Friday, November 6, 1-2:30 p.m., Postdoctoral Associates and Fellows
Professors striving to combine ambitious academic careers with fulfilling personal lives face challenging balancing acts. Studies show that people with a dual focus on work and family are less stressed and more successful than those whose focus is on just work or just family. In this interactive workshop we will review the strategies these dual focused people follow to achieve balance and engage in related exercises. The strategies presented are relevant to both women and men, and to singles as well as those with spouses and children.
Space in each workshop is available for 30 participants; registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. You will receive an automated message indicating the workshop is full once the maximum registration is reached. If you do not see this message, you have successfully registered for a session.
Rena Seltzer is president of the coaching and training business Leader Academic and author of The Coach’s Guide for Women Professors: Who Want a Successful Career and a Well-Balanced Life (Stylus). Her workshops combine well-researched information with fun, interactive activities and practical tools that participants remember and continue to employ long after the workshops are over. This will be her fifth year presenting professional development workshops to Yale Faculty members.
We hope you find these workshops helpful.
